Rubio Visits Hungary to Back Orbán, Signs Nuclear Deal Ahead of April Election
On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to Budapest to formally express support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s re-election campaign for a fifth consecutive term. During his visit, Rubio highlighted the "golden age" of relations between the two countries, thanks to the strong personal friendship between Orbán and President Donald Trump. In addition to politics, the two countries signed a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement that involves U.S. technology and fuel. Orbán, who is facing a tough election on April 12, has long been a divisive figure in the EU because of his warm friendship with Vladimir Putin and his opposition to helping Ukraine. Nevertheless, he is a hero in the American MAGA movement because of his tough stance on immigration and LGBTQ+ issues. In an attempt to get one last boost from the polls, Orbán has issued an "open invitation" to Trump to visit Budapest prior to the election.
